In 313 A.D., Emperor Constantine I signed the procla-mation Edictum Mediolanense (the Edict of Milan) pro-claiming religious tolerance throughout the Roman Em-pire. The practical impact of this was to begin an on-again, off-again tolerance for the rapidly growing Christ-ian faith. Over the next few hundred years and outlast-ing the Empire, Christianity moved from being a small, strange Oriental faith to the dominant religion through-out Europe. In doing so, it displaced the veneration of myriad gods and goddesses that were worshiped hitherto throughout all these lands and beyond.
