Uncertainties are mounting, both environmentally and economically, and consultancies will have to weave their way through the multitudinous issues presenting themselves in the coming years. A transformation of traditional approaches to environmental engineering may have to be undertaken as carbon targets are squeezed tighter, and at a time when investment is harder to come by.rnPromotion of innovative technology and innovative approaches to soft engineering practice, such as public consultation, and asset and risk management, will all fall under the consultanfs remit. It may seem unlikely that adoption of new approaches would be taken in such a conservative industry at a time of global upheaval. But it may be a question of do or die. Consultancies already have much of the talent and expertise required.rnRather than risk-taking, it is confidence that is required to pursue strategy that delivers the best outcome for both client and planet. Multi-agency collaboration, such as that undertaken by RoyalrnHaskoning to examine the impact of climate change in North-east England (see page 8), should be embraced. As water underpins all other infrastructure and the social network, the industry needs to make sure its voice is heard at all levels.
