There have been enormous improvements in control of sewage effluent in Scotland since the mid-1990s but these improvements have been made possible by the increase in charges on water customers. This increase was unavoidable given the neglect of Scotland's sewerage network over the past 50 years. Sewage is the most important cause of water pollution in Scotland. It represents pollution caused by all of us. Scottish Water (SW) is the public utility that is responsible for taking our pollution and treating it. In 1995, there were more than 1,400km of rivers affected by sewage discharges. By 2000, the length recorded as affected by sewage pollution was reduced to 1,200km. This improvement is expected to continue over the next five years. By 2005, sewage will have been replaced by diffuse agricultural pollution as the most important source of pollution.
