Research findings on problems associated with stagnant water and chemical treatments contribute to increasing interest in forced circulation of lakes and reservoirs to prevent algae blooms. The annual onslaught of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms plague many fresh water lakes and reservoirs, and the 50-years practice of pouring tons of copper sulphate into these surface waters have created problems that require more expensive treatment, threatening marine habitats throughout the world.
