Consulting engineers completing a pilot project to remove free-phase residual petroleum from subsurface soils and groundwater at a Romanian refinery concluded that a full-scale double pump extraction/recovery system involving 10 to 12 wells could remove 250 to 300 tons of petroleum per day and avoid groundwater remediation costs up to US$20 million. The US groundwater and environmental engineering services firm Leggette, Brashears & Graham, Inc. (LBG), a project partner, undertook the project with the Romanian National Oil Company (Petrom) and Petrom subsidiaries Astra Romana Refinery and INCERP Cercetare. Petrom commissioned the project to contain underground pollution caused by petroleum products in the vicinity of the Astra Romana Refinery in Ploiesti, Romania. The project was carried out in conjunction with S.C. Rafinaria "Astra Romana" SA, owner of the facility and its project associate INCERP Cercetare, Ploiesti, Romania.
