Europe's trapped and troubled Baltic Sea will take further steps towards a sustainable future this year as current projects within the ongoing plan to reduce the burden of incoming nutrients come to fruition. Widespread eutrophication and the associated outcomes of algal growths, polluted beaches, damaged fish spawning areas and zones of oxygen depletion have long been recognized -effects that are aggravated by the Baltic's shallowness and constricted outlets to the North Sea through the straits of the Kattegat and Skagerrak. This limits the free exchange of water between the Baltic and the North Sea and impedes mixing of the latter's salt water with fresh water inputs from rivers of the Baltic catchment.
