Consultancy Sinclair Knight Merz has been appointed by Australia's National Water Commission (NWC), to develop Phase 2 of the Atlas for Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems (GDEs) project. This project addresses the lack of a systematic record of the location and characteristics of GDEs across Australia. The development of the Atlas, which is expected to be completed by May 2012, is a significant first step in collating all known information regarding GDEs, as well as developing significant new GDE knowledge, says the company, and will be used as a primary reference for GDE information in the future. 'The ultimate aim of the GDE Atlas is to facilitate the inclusion of environmental groundwater use in the water planning and allocation process,' explains Alex Paton, Manager, Capability Marketing at SKM.
