Is sewer ventilation an art or is there some real science behind the design of ventilation systems in sewer systems? Gold Coast Water (GCW) has undertaken extensive master planning studies of the Beenleigh and Merrimac catchments in SE Queensland, resulting in a series of new works, upgrades and renewal works over the planning horizon. The Beenleigh Merrimac Pimpama (BMP) Alliance, which is currently delivering this infrastructure, identified the need to gain a better understanding of the design criteria associated with sewer ventilation. Guidance as to current ventilation practice elsewhere in Australia and to the supposed purpose of ventilation was sought from various sources. It was found that criteria in use in Australia for designing general ventilation systems are based on "rules of thumb" without a solid and clearly acknowledged scientific basis. In this article relevant guiding documents are surveyed, the purposes served by sewer ventilation are clearly identified, and the issues that have to be faced when designing a ventilation system are discussed. Opportunities for researchers are highlighted.
