摘要

Autumn migration brings a great variety of birds to the UK that benefit from our relatively mild winters. One such species is the elegant and distinctive common goldeneye duck (Bucephala clangula). Arriving between August and December, it stays here until early spring when it returns to its northern European breeding sites, although a small number of pairs have colonised sites in Scotland, where it remains year-round. The piercing yellow eyes that give this bird its name make it stand out on large lakes, reservoirs and canals, where it shuns the crowds, preferring the company of just a few members of its own species. It also has an unusually shaped head that makes it easy to identify - the Bucephala in its Latin name translates to 'bull-headed'. The male has black-and-white plumage with a dark green head featuring white patches on the cheeks, while the female has a more subtle appearance with mainly grey feathers and a dull brown head. Both sport bright orange legs and chunky black beaks.
