None of the options being evaluated in the new Hanford Tank Closure and Waste Management Environmental Impact Statement would meet Tri-Party Agreement milestones for emptying Hanford's tanks and treating the waste. The Dept. of Energy has proposed six alternatives with variations that would have the waste treated by 2036 at the earliest, eight years after the TPA deadline, if 99 percent of the waste is removed from the tanks. The alternatives assume a 2015 start for the Waste Treatment Plant to vitrify tank waste, which could be unrealistically early. DOE does not expect to have a good estimate of the plant's schedule until this summer.
