摘要

In his 1880 Report of the Geology of the High Plateaus of Utah, Clarence E. Dutton described a "grand stairway of sequential cliffs and terraces" that stretched from the Grand Canyon northward to Bryce Canyon. Dutton, a U.S. Army captain, geologist, and assistant to renowned explorer John Wesley Powell, was describing a massive transect of exposed sedimentary rock layers that geologist Charles Rollin Keyes would later name the "Grand Staircase" in 1924, a term which remains to this day. Each "step," or cliff band in this structure Dutton recognized, represented a different period of geologic development. At the bottom, the Chocolate Cliffs were the oldest of the steps, notably exposed in the depths of the Grand Canyon. The youngest are the Pink Cliffs, recognizable in Bryce Canyon. Beneath the Pink Cliffs lay the Grey Cliffs, and beneath them the White Cliffs. Between the Chocolate and the White Cliffs, Dutton explained, are the Vermillion Cliffs. In the years after Dutton's initial description of the region, geologists would refine their descriptions of each of these steps, identifying individual features and layers composing them.
