Employing electron beam welding (EBW), as a means for producing automotive transmission components is a well established method that has been utilised worldwide for many decades now. As such, the process is generally viewed as not only being a very robust one (due to the stable transformation of electron beam power into heat directly at the workpiece) but also a very flexible one (due to the fact that the weld shape can be influenced in a wide range by welding parameters). This high degree of process flexibility enables the equipment manufacturer to readily choose a method of operation that not only allows him to optimise the welding results but also the economics of utilising this joining means as a mass production tool. These are two performance criteria, which are critical in today's competitive business environment - where technologies are required to be constantly reviewed, upgraded and pushed to the limits. In the following, the present day state-of-the-art of EBW equipment will be reviewed and the most recent developments affecting the equipment's application capabilities will be discussed.
