The Latest: Telefonica UK (O2) is planning to deploy Long Term Evolution for Machine (LTE-M) networks across the UK in 2020,with 50 sites already live. The company claims this to be the first LTE-M network roll-out in the country.Implications: Operators’ ongoing investments in LTE-M and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) networks reinforce our view that Low PowerWide Area Networks (LPWANs) will remain relevant and co-exist with 5G in the Internet of Things (IoT) market. Testimony of that isthe fact that UK operators are continuing to allocate resources to expand their LPWANs despite having already launched 5G. This isbecause LPWANs remain better-suited than 5G to support IoT applications in industries where the transmission of infrequent andsmall volumes of data does not require the new standard’s extremely high speed and low latency.
