Rather than being complementary, street lighting andnfac?ade lighting are typically designed independently of each other. Asna result, light from street lighting luminaires might spill onto buildingnfac?ades and influence characteristics of the fac?ade lighting includingnrequired light levels and color. Conversely, fac?ade lighting might reflectnonto the street and contribute to the street illumination. This manuscriptnpresents an integrated approach to analyzing the interaction betweennthe street and fac?ade lighting in consideration of light pollution control.nA generic street model with various calculation grids was studied. Itnwas found that a moderately lit fac?ade contributes to a horizontalnilluminance of 5 lux or more on the street and a vertical illuminance ofn4 lux or more 1.5 m above the sidewalk. An over-illuminated streetnmay result when both street and fac?ade lighting exist without referencento each other. The size of the light-pollution calculation grid and the usenof a 3-D illuminance graph were studied. It was found that fluctuationsnin the calculated amount of light pollution could occur unless the size ofnthe pollution calculation grid is large enough to capture all of thenupward flux. A method of achieving the optimal size of the calculationngrid is demonstrated. Shortcomings of using light pollution percentagenas a light pollution index are highlighted and an alternative lightnpollution index is proposed.
