50 years ago this month, Nick Holonyak Jr successfully created visiblenlight using semiconductor materials. His recipe, composed of galliumnarsenide phosphide (GaAsP), was coined “the magic one”. It emitted red lightnand was not suitable for general illumination. But Holonyak had a vision. Henunderstood that his invention was just the beginning and that thesenmaterials would eventually become a source of white light. In a recentninterview with GE, he is quoted as saying “I thought it might be a decade.nLittle did I realize that it would take much longer than that.” [GE Reports,n2012]
