This paper presents results of modeling, experiments, andnsimulation of transmission of beam and diffuse daylight throughnstraight circular light pipes with and without bends. Analytic method isnused in the development of an algorithm for tracing light rays thatnenter, are reflected from interior pipe surfaces, and eventually transmitnfrom a pipe. Each bend section is modeled as a torus. For short straightnpipes, the transmitted collimated rays at the exit ports form interestingngeometrical patterns. Results from calculation of transmission of beamnand diffuse daylight through straight pipes with and without bendsnmatch well with results from experiments. The paper also comparesnresults from calculation of transmitted daylight illuminance whennmeasured luminance of 145 standard sky zones are used to formnentering rays, and when generated luminance of the same sky zonesnare used. The method presented is theoretical but lends itself tonpractical application.
