Contemporary office buildings are frequently designed withncurtain wall systems that inevitably allow enormous amounts of directnsunlight. This fact has several negative effects on the worknenvironment and as a result, from an energy usage point of view, mostnof today’s curtain wall buildings use certain shading devices to keep ancomfortable work environment. Among many shading devices,nperforated aluminum panels have often been used as an estheticalnrespond to popular High-tech and Neo Modern style architecture sincenthe early 1980’s but their functional effectiveness has been notnseriously examined. This study compared luminous environments innoffice buildings with illuminance and luminance values betweennseveral perforated panels and fabric roller shades, which are the mostnwidely used shading devices. This study creates a new functionalnstandard for perforated panels and demonstrates their value not onlynin style but also as a reliable shading device.
