Microsoft's BitLocker Drive Encryption technology, which is available in the Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Vista, helps you protect the data on laptops in case they get stolen. To configure and use BitLocker without the BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool, you must prepare the hard drive with specifically formatted partitions prior to installing Vista using Vista's Pre-installation Environment (PE). If you bought a laptop with Vista Ultimate preloaded, or installed Vista before learning about BitLocker, you can use the BitLocker Drive Preparation Tool to configure your drive post-installation.
