Does the following scenario sound familfar to you? A frustrated user calls the help desk at 5:00 pm on a Friday afternoon complaining of painfully slow system performance, and she has a project due now for the CFO. You trudge over to her computer, open System Monitor, and set up the program to track several performance counters over the next hour to determine where the memory or resource leak is coming from. Meanwhile, she's panicked and you have to cancel your dinner reservations. Luckily, with a little advanced planning, you'll be able to avoid this guessing game in the future. By using Windows 2000's and XP's Counter Logs feature, you can set up System Monitor to continually track the most important system metrics over time to determine what's typical for the workload on your users' systems. This way, when a problem arises, you'll be able to quickly spot its source and fix the issue immediately.
