摘要

In Part 1, we began by asking: "Is the Navy ready to fight tonight?" and ended by promising to show some actions the Navy should consider in order to take a bigger step in the ring. As an aircrew, certainly one of the more exciting pre-deployment training events is the MISSILEX when you finally get to fire a live AMRAAM or AIM-9X at a real target rather than carrying around another inert "blue tube of death" on your wingtip. Especially considering today's limited Non-Combat Expenditure Allocation (NCEA) air-to-air missiles available for training, getting to be one of the chosen few in the Squadron to pull the trigger is perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity that many never share. And even though simulated missile firings during much more complex missions at AIRWING Fallon, or during SFARP are part of routine training, the heart beats a bit faster when a real "smokin"' live missile is going to come off the rail and actually head for a target, assuming of course that everything works as planned. But, when it's all over, is the aircrew significantly more prepared to "fight tonight" as a result of executing this very limited NCEA scenario? Now, imagine the same live-fire scenario, but instead, with multiple groups of "bogeys" potentially carrying radar jammers and possibly even the ability to shoot "Smokey SAMS" back at you to test your look-out doctrine. Add in the possibility of some simulated commercial aircraft, or even some non-squawking "bogeys" in the area. What if there are threat ships, ground-based surface-to-air fire control radars, and GPS jammers adding to the electronic threat environment? And then jump to the varsity-level C4I training scenario by including the Carrier Strike Group's (CSG) Surface Combatants in a Missile/Joint Engagement Zone (M/JEZ)) and carrying surface-to-air SM-2 and 3 s and self-defense missiles well-suited to engage inbound threats at range. Do all of this, and does the training event described above start to become a bit more representative of what you might expect to see when deployed in the high-end fight?
