Surface flaws that occur on insulated wire, cables, extruded tubing and even glass tubes are not only visually unacceptable, but usually indicate a problem with the process or material being used. They can also indicate a potential weakness in the structural integrity of the product. The need for reliable flaw detection is not merely cosmetic, but is crucial to the delivery of a quality product at a cost-effective price. This article describes: the nature and size of common flaws on wire, cable and tubing; techniques used; probability of detection at high line speeds; and modern approaches using fibreoptic sensing heads and robust electronics to make detection both reliable and affordable.
