Over the last two years, Alltel [AT] has grown its wireless footprint through mutually beneficial deals with companies trying to divest wireless licenses, but the target of the Little Rock, Ark.-based company's latest growth bid doesn't consider the deal beneficial. Monroe, La.-based CenturyTel [CTL] last Wednesday rejected Alltel's unsolicited $9 billion takeover offer. Instead, CenturyTel said it is interested in selling its wireless operations while continuing in the wireline competitive local exchange market.
