Bell Canada's Manitoba-based Bell MTS division has announced that as part of its 2017-21 CAD1 billion (USD749 million) CAPEX plan for the province, it has earmarked CAD400 million to expand direct fiber connections to 275,000 homes and commercial locations in the city of Winnipeg. Fully funded by Bell - working closely with Manitoba Hydro and the City of Winnipeg -the fiber project will give Winnipeggers access to services including 'Gigabit Fibe Internet' at speeds up to 1.5Gbps, 'Fibe TV and 'Whole Home Wi-Fi' in addition to 'future advanced technologies enabled by the high data speeds and capacity', Bell declared. The group estimates the Winnipeg gigabit project will create more than 1,100 direct and indirect jobs in the city and other Manitoba locations and an additional CAD900 million in new economic activity. Bell MTS is also in the process of deploying gigabit fiber to more than 30 communities throughout Manitoba.
