摘要

This article recounts the controversy surrounding a nineteenth-century American Baptist missionary in British Burma, Ellen Mason, an early advocate of indigenous female evangelism. By building numerous schools, employing Bible readers and advocating social reform, Mason supported indigenous leadership in the mission, addressed social ills involving women, and upheld the rights of ethnic minorities in the Burmese city of Toungoo. Her methods and her maverick style of leadership provoked a lawsuit by fellow missionaries as well as charges of unwomanly behaviour and propagating heresy. Through her pioneering actions, Mason was seen to subvert the authority of the mission agencies, the colonial social order, the government, her husband, and the Bible. While each of these points is debatable, the controversy they generated resulted in her expulsion from the Baptist mission and the end of her efforts to educate and employ women as evangelists in Burma.
