摘要

The Chesapeake Bay buyboat is a shallow-draft freighter taking its name mostly from its function in the Bay's oyster fishery. Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century when the oyster industry was in its prime, more than 2,000 skipjacks and other engineless craft dredged oysters under sail in the Bay. In addition, thousands of watermen tonged for oysters, first from sailing log canoes and later from deadrise skiffs powered by internal-combustion engines.
