Sam Devlin can never quit tinkering with his small powerboat designs, even the proven, perennially popular ones. Take the Surf Scoter, the 22'8" pilothouse cruiser he first released in the 1980s. It's now morphed four times, the most recent iteration delivering a fresh goosing of speed, a broadened beam and stretched pilothouse, and, glory be, an enclosed head. "I hate heads," Devlin grumbles. "I just hate them! The whole damn things! But I've been trying to listen to the women a tiny bit. I'm trying to deal with the marketplace."
