The Texas 200 is a 160-mile, five-day endurance cruise along the Gulf Coast of south Texas from Port Mansfield to Magnolia Beach. It's relatively remote and uncivilized (think deserted beaches, oyster shell reefs, rattlesnakes, and cacti), distances are long (30 to 40 miles a day), the sun is relentless (you can count the shade trees you'll encounter on the thumbs of both hands), and though the route is sheltered by a long chain of undeveloped barrier islands, it's usually windy enough to build a vicious chop that will rattle your teeth and keep rnsmall-boat sailors busy bailing. In a word, it's grueling. But strangely, it's also becoming popular.
