In the previous issue,we set up and built most of the framework for the Solo Carry.By this time,you may have lashed most of the boat together,according to the instructions and illustrations given in Part I.The idea of lashing the frame together came to me from seeing the yet-to-be-skinned boats in Bruce Lemon's 1998 baidarka (Aleutian kayak) building class at WoodenBoat School.The repetitions of ribs and lashings make a pleasing visual rhythm. In this design,I decided to use battens,instead of square or rectangular stringers,to put more wood surface before the eye.Having grown up with cedar-and-canvas canoes,I was inspired to install brass stembands and use mahogany trim,and I came to favor coloring my boats with pigment to avoid the look of stained,yellowing skins.
