Havhingsten fra glendalough's crew of 62 is divided into three major sections: 20 in the fore-ship,16 in the 'midship,18 in the aftership.All were coordinated from a raised afterdeck,called the lifting,by six officers who also handled navigation and steering.Two ran the galley. The linen sail is heavy-about 250 lbs dry and much more than that when soaked by rain-and has complicated rigging.The aftership handles braces running from the end of the yard down to cleats placed well aft.They also trimmed the sheets made off to the lower corners of the sail; ten of them manned the halyard; others handled a downhaul rigged to the parrel,a horseshoe-shaped compass timber holding the yard to the mast.
