摘要

One of the most exciting things about wood as a boatbuilding material is its tremendous versatility.Thousands of years of working with this miraculous natural substance have taught us myriad techniques for creating durable,functional,and beautiful artifacts.Even today,we find a staggering array of projects utilizing the advantages of wood in creating watercraft,from replicas of heavy,sawn-frame vessels of exploration and colonization,to featherweight planing skiffs. Also during those thousands of years,we have discovered that with wood's many strengths come a few weaknesses,and we have learned over time to employ other materials,with other strengths,to offset those weaknesses and create a better,stronger whole.Virtually every boat more complex than a dugout canoe is a composite structure of a number of disparate materials.Over the millennia,those materials have run the gamut from animal sinew to plant fiber,iron,bronze,aluminum,various forms of plastic,and stainless steel.
