Questions often arise concerning the best way to achieve a i curve in a frame,deckbeam,or knee.Can it be cut from straight-grained wood,or should it be steamed,laminated,or gotten out of a crook? Unfortunately,there is no single answer to these questions,because much depends on the design of the piece,available materials,the equipment at hand,and the time required to accomplish the desired result. Knees Take,for instance,a quarter knee for an open boat.It can be cut from straight-grained stock if it has a simple shape and has only a shallow radius cut into it.The cross-grain at each end can be bound together by the fastenings holding the knee in place.However,in a more delicate knee cut from straight-grain,especially one having unusually long arms (with short,cross-grain fibers at one end or both ends) or one that rivets to an inwale,would be unacceptable (see drawings 1 and 2).In this case,a steam-bent or laminated knee would be more appropriate.A natural crook can always be used if it is of a hard,rot-resistant,well-seasoned wood.If you have planned ahead and have crooks on hand,by all means use them.
