While journeys of discovery are as numerous as the stars, voyagers who most deserve our attention are those who have sought to learn about themselves as well as the world around them. American folklore is laden with stories of those who traveled west, yet for certain mariners, the true path to the unknown headed northeastward, a yearning as magnetic as the compass needle. Before Sam Manning became a marine illustrator and historian, he was a novice seaman and boatbuilder. During the summer of 1955, while a student at Bowdoin College, Manning and a companion set forth on an adventure in a 23' dipping lug-rigged seine dory that Manning had restored from salvage.
