I've been in love with schooners since I was a young boy. My first love was the Baltimore Clipper, spurred on by romantic tales of Revolutionary War privateers; however, my eye soon strayed to the beautiful lines of the Gloucester fishermen, and it was only a matter of time before I was head over heels for any vessel with its after mast taller than its forward mast. I've even gone so far as to dream of a rule-beating schooner with which to take home all the silver at Brooklin's own Eggemoggin Reach Regatta; the nearest I have ever come to reading a rating rule closely enough to design to it has been to notice that gaff schooners get a whopping 20 percent credit in their rating. I remain convinced that it's not only possible, but fairly easy, to design a schooner fast enough to handily outsail that handicap.
