John Prentiss Benson painted sea and sky as though he were familiar with viewing them from the deck of a ship, yet the artist spent very little appreciable time at sea. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1865, Benson just missed the heyday of Salem's maritime commerce, though in his youth he was undoubtedly surrounded by all manner of vessels. Benson was considered a phenomenon for beginning his artistic career late in life. During the last days of the age of sail-1890 to 1920-Benson maintained his own architecture firm in New York, only dabbling in art for leisure. It wasn't until 1922, at age 57, that Benson gave up the architectural firm (without reservation) and began his painting full-time.
