Tony Grove of Gabriola Island, British Columbia, where he has been a teacher at the Silva Bay Shipyard School, traveled to Europe last year-which isn't uncommon. But he spent part of his vacation building boats in Sardinia-which is. "We were visiting one of my 2004 Silva Bay students, Gianluca Nieddu, who lives in Alghero on the upper west coast," he writes. "The boat I helped him with was a 40-year-old motorized, 43' former Mediterranean fishing boat. The wooden carvel hull is planked in yellow pine fastened with iron nails on sawn oak frames. The boat, like most Mediterranean fish boats, was built with a canoe stern, where five to six planks per side had rotten ends." Freshwater infiltration and poor ventilation had done their damage. "We fitted 5' to 10' replacements. This type of repair can be difficult because each plank takes a sharp compound bend at the aft stem, and leverage is difficult.
