摘要

George Calkins, 97, December 26, 2008, Port Townsend, Washington. Honored by WoodenBoat just last September at the 2008 Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival for his lifetime of achievement in boat design and construction, Mr. Calkins (see WB Nos. 205 and 163) was best known for his design of the Bartender, a seaworthy plywood double-ended powerboat. He designed his first boat at age eight, and during his lifetime his work encompassed everything from fish boats to sailing yachts. After World War II, he settled in what is now Lincoln City, Oregon, where he founded his Calkins Craft boatyard and built a great many boats, most of them plywood planked. It was during that period that he developed the Bartender, in sizes ranging from 19' to 29'. After selling his yard in 1963, he designed and built his own 75' LOA schooner, TIAMA, aboard which he and his wife, Wilma (who survives him), lived for 14 years before settling on Marrowstone Island in Puget Sound in 1972.
