For Jim Moores, it's a point of pride that the often tight-seamed, double-planked classic commuter yachts he restores come out with bottle-smooth top sides that rival the finish of any faired composite hull. It was a minor personal catastrophe when mobile lift operators relaunching the restored 91' Trumpy INNISFAIL from the Moores Marine Yacht Center in Beaufort, North Carolina, failed to keep even tension on the multiple slings supporting the hull. The hull twisted, cracking the paint along many seams, and the yard ate the $3,400 cost of repairs to the finish. The episode prompted Moores to write up his guide to lifting old wooden boats, especially the long, straight-keeled powerboats that are his specialty.
