Canvas has been used as a household floor covering for hundreds.of years, so it couldn't have been much of a leap to realize it would help minimize the water coming through a wooden boat's deck. Canvas is a great decking material: It works with the boat, moving and flexing in tandem; it is easy to repair, inexpensive, natural, and nontoxic.rnA deck on wooden boats should be installed with as much care and attention as goes into the hull. If the boat's deck leaks, it will not only make for unpleasant living conditions, but it will also allow the passage of rot-promoting fresh water. As the saying goes, "Boats rot from the top down."rnDuring my years of wooden boat restoration, I have become familiar with various methods and materials for deck construction and repair, and I have used modern materials such as fiberglass or Dynel set in epoxy for a deck covering. I have also tried many methods of laying canvas on wooden decks: setting it into wet paint or lead putty, underlaying it with Irish felt, and using laid solid-wood decking or plywood.
