Here we have two fine inboard-powered skiffs from the drawing tables of William and John Atkin. The shorter-but-larger boat, Sallie Hyde, easily handles heavy loads and rough water. Her longer-yet-smaller cousin, the slender Sergeant Faunce, will cruise at about 15 mph pushed by only 8 hp. Both offer generous fuel efficiency. These handsome and practical powerboats can trace their heritage to the Sea Bright Skiffs of the New Jersey shore. The old skiffs (small boats that worked in big water) evolved in the surf along exposed Atlantic beaches during the 19th century. An original skiff displays a round-bilged lapstrake hull with full ends, a strong sheerline, and a tall, raked transom. Its most distinctive feature rests at, and below, the waterline: the box deadwood. Any questions we might have about the form and construction of box deadwood (or box garboards or rolled-box garboards) should yield to study of Sam Manning's good drawings in WB No. 109, pages 41 and 42.
