摘要

In WB No. 206, WoodenBoat Senior Editor Tom Jackson reveals an adventurous side in "Running with the Stallion"-his recounting of a voyage in a replica Viking longship built at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark. This modern-day longship was patterned on a wreck excavated by archaeologists in Roskilde Fjord, near Copenhagen, but believed to have been built at the Viking port in Dublin, Ireland. Jackson remarks that "scientists say with authority that the keelson for the original longship was shaped from an oak tree felled in May or June of 1042 in Ireland, probably at Glendalough." I would guess that a few "doubting Thomases" might have found that statement of precise year, months, and location to be a bit beyond belief. What I will attempt in this column is to provide a brief synopsis of tree-ring dating and how, in special circumstances, it can be quite precise.
