In ship modeling, as in any of the fine arts-which is exactly what ship modeling is-there is great value in looking at things very closely. In this new volume by Rob Napier, whose noted ship modeling has been celebrated in these pages before (see WB No. 174), we have an extraordinarily close look at the prodigious effort involved in a professional restoration and documentation of just one model. In Reconditioning an Eighteenth-Century Ship Model, VALKENISSE, Retourschip of 1 717, we learn not only about the ship and the model, but also about Napier himself. Just being in the presence of a 300-year-old ship model is an amazing sensation. I can't imagine what it's like to clean it, analyze it, restore its damaged or missing pieces, and rerig it from deadeyes to flag halyards. This is exactly what Napier did for the 1717 Dutch ship VALKENISSE, which is owned by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, where Napier has been a consultant for many years.
