Boatbuilders, whether professional or amateur, face an array of chemical products to choose from when constructing, restoring, or protecting their boats. Among these are paints, caulks, sealants, adhesives, and resin coatings. Often the choices take into account performance, ease of use, and cost, but since these products can also risk chemical exposure, safety should be considered as well. There are several ways, or "routes of exposure," through which chemicals can enter the body, among them skin contact, ingestion, and inhalation. Taking the time to recognize the potential risks associated with any particular product and defining the way to protect against them are good first steps toward safe use.
