While there are a number of variables that can affect both the cost and time invested in building a new boat, perhaps none are as straightforward—and, yet, as confusing—as the selection of the finish to be used on the hull. The choices are: paint, varnish, oil, and synthetics (the relative newcomers on the block; clear, or almost so, coatings that are neither oil nor varnish). Generally speaking, low-tech one-part paints and varnishes are preferable for conventional wooden construction, as the paints are formulated to be flexible to accommodate the movement of the planking beneath. One-part systems are also usually easier to touch up than are two-part mixes.
