Reflected by newly fallen snow outside, the winter light streams through the big windows in Van Dam Custom Boats' main shop in Boyne City, Michigan. Inside on a quiet Saturday morning are the handsaws, planers, tablesaws, and other power equipment one might expect to find here. The place is clean, well organized, ready to spring into action when the crew comes back on Monday morning. A vintage Chris-Craft launch awaiting restoration sits to one side; several sets of boat molds line a wall, along with assorted lumber on racks; a nicely finished soapbox derby car hangs above. In a corner, minus its bed, sits an oversized pickup truck awaiting modifications so it can haul a trailer and a 38' powerboat.
