By taking matters into his own hands, David Lee Roth helped create the Van Halen "M&M's" tour rider clause. All touring music bands have a tour rider. It's a contract that spells out all the requirements that each show's promoter and the venue are responsible for meeting. In the old days they were typically a simple pamphlet that covered things like towels, snacks and beverages provided backstage for the band, along with an adequate "backline" of house audio gear and the power to run it all. But by the 1980s, Van Halen's over-the-top rock concerts were a daunting new challenge that many promoters and venues were ill-prepared to meet. They found this out the hard way, eventually forcing Roth to come up with a creative way of verifying a promoter's attention to detail, or the lack thereof. He inserted into the middle of their extensively detailed tour rider a requirement for a large bowl of M&M's candy to be put out for them backstage. But there was a catch. All of the brown M&M's had to be removed.
