Since the beginning of 2003, the Hamburg Port Authority has been deploying a newly developed EDP system to monitor dredges. The system is constantly further developed and adjusted to new requirements. The system's primary task is to monitor and document all dredge-relevant process data such as volumes, position and dredging depth as well as to produce data to verify the invoicing documents. The system consists of two key basic components:rnThe data collection system is installed on a notebook, which is located onboard the dredge to be monitored and connected to the contractually agreed interface of the dredge system. The data collection system stores the raw data sent and ensures that the data are transferred to the data evaluation software. A history function permits to reproduce individual dredging cycles on the basis of these raw data in the event of contractual disputes, for instance. The data are usually transmitted via an internet connection (UMTS/HSDPA); real-time online monitoring is also possible.rnThe evaluation software reads in the data transferred and creates the individual dredge cycles in dialogue with the user. The system then evaluates the data, program-controlled, and creates the documents to verify the accounting. The data are stored in a database and the entire data such collected are available at any time for further evaluations.rnThe structure of the overall system is modular. Any changes and/or supplements to it can be realized quickly. The system is suitable for both silt and sand dredging, and it can be adjusted to the various dredges and dredging tasks by simple configuration without the need for program-technical interferences.rnIn the winter term of 2004/ 2005, the system simultaneously monitored and accounted for up to six trailing suction hopper dredges which combined dredged a total of 8 M cubic ms of silt. Based on 40 M data records 2,500 dredging cycles were generated. The system has proven itself in other administrations, too, whereby the HPA offers the monitoring as a service that ranges from the collection, evaluation and production of billing-relevant data all the way to their documentation.
