This paper has summarized the outline of the Technical Guideline for Countermeasures against Dioxins in Bed Material in Ports and Harbors recently published in Japan. The guideline is based on the current knowledge of science and technologies. However, R&D concerning countermeasures against dioxins in bed materials has been currently undertaken quite steadily in various sectors and in the fields. Thus, the technical guideline will be revised, in order to update newest technologies concerning countermeasures and to include scientific knowledge on ecological risk assessment.
