In January 2009 the vessel Profiler 2, a 41' X 19' aluminum catamaran, was delivered to the Public Works Government Services hydro survey base on Annacis Island near Vancouver BC, Canada. The Profiler 2 will replace the original fiberglass survey boat, Profiler, which has conducted multi channel sweep surveys on the Frasier River and waters in the Vancouver BC area since 1977.rnThe new vessel is equipped with a Ross Laboratories Model 4810 channel sweep system configured for 13 channel operation. Twenty five foot arms were installed that are deployed and stowed with hydraulic controls mounted at the helm station. The Profiler 2 can sweep a line almost 60 ft wide. The multi channel sweep system is still the preferred method of survey on the Frasier River. The bottom coverage is equal to or greater than that of a multi beam survey in the sometimes shallow depths encountered. Data processing for multi channel survey data is much simpler while still meeting IHO standards for channel clearance. And from a cost standpoint, significant debris and logs come down the Fraser River during freshet. The cost of replacing a single damaged transducer is much cheaper than a multibeam sonar head.
