Two years after the contract was signed, the Pearl Qatar reclamation is now completed. In frastructure and construction contractors have begun building on a 400 ha site where, two years ago, there was nothing else but a big shallow pearling bank. By contrast to common perception, this quite exceptional project has been executed in the dry, behind protective dykes that will now be cut for flooding the marinas, beaches and blue water areas. A dredger's dilemma inspired this unique, and in fact bold execution method. A large part of the seabed consists of hard rock at a very shallow site, meaning that it is too hard to be dredged by a small dredge and too shallow for a large dredge such as QDC's Al Mahaar to operate in due to required draught and minimum cutting depth. This dilemma was overcome by working in the dry, which not only required an extensive fleet of dumpers, trucks, excavators, bulldozers and loaders, but also the construction of temporary bunds and dewatering of the boxes. As an additional advantage of the dry execution method, excavated rock from behind the dykes could be used for the construction of shore protection.
