The 'Real' Impact of GATT/WTO- a Generalised Approach

摘要

INCE the 1950s, world trade has grown dramatically faster than world GDP. While in 2007, real-world output was about nine times higher than in 1950, trade increased more than 20-fold. In this period, trade liberalisation took place under the auspices of the GATT/WTO which among others reduced ad valorem tariffs on industrial products on average from over 40 per cent to less than 4 per cent. Meanwhile, no less than 153 countries participate in the World Trade Organization with further countries striving for WTO membership. It therefore comes as no surprise that the GATT/WTO is believed to have a major impact on world trade.
